Background: A group of former South Vietnamese servicemen who were badly wounded while fighting alongside United States troops north of Saigon demonstrated in the South Vietnam capital on Saturday ( 6 March) in an attempt to get pensions. These had been refused because the servicemen had fought under United States command. The group demonstrated outside the National Assembly in Saigon and threatened to burn themselves with petrol if the South Vietnam Government did not help them. They ended the day with a promise from President Nguyen Van Thieu that they would each get a pension of six dollars (about 50 shillings sterling) a month.
