  • Description

An increase in the price of jute is likely to follow the signing of a joint declaration between Bangladesh and India in New Delhi on Thursday (16 May). The signing came at the end of a five day visit to Delhi by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujib Rahman.

India and Bangladesh are the world's two largest suppliers of jute and jute products. The joint declaration said that in future there would be closer co-operation between them in the fields of production, trade and promotion.

Sheikh Mujib and the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, both agreed to press ahead with the construction of a barrage at the mouth of the Ganges. It is due to be in operation before the end of the year and will help rehabilitation work at the port of Calcutta and also supply fresh water for the city.
