    STEWART'S FAMED WET WEATHER SKILL EXERTED ITSELF IMMEDIATELY AS HE PUSHED HIS NO. 7 MATRA FORD INTO THE LEAD FROM THE START, TO BUILD UP A 16 SECOND LEAD FROM GRAHAM HILL, WHO FINISHED SECOND, AT THE HALF-WAY STAGE.

    DOMINATING THE RACE WITH HIS SUPERB DRIVING, STEWART APPEARED TO HAVE A COMMANDING LEAD AT THIS STAGE BUT HILL IN NO. 1 BEGAN TO REDUCE THE GAP.

    AUSTRALIAN VETERAN HACK BRABHAM WHO HAD SHOT ROUND THE CIRCUIT IN 1 MIN. 20 SECS., IN HIS NEW BRABHAM COSWORTH-FORD IN PRACTICE, TO GET POLE POSITION, WAS IN TROUBLE SOON AFTER THE START. HIS AERO-FOIL BROKE AND FORCED HIM TO RETIRE.

    ANOTHER LEADING DRIVER IN DIFFICULTIES WAS JOHN SURTEES. HIS B.R.M. DEVELOPED TROUBLE AND HE WAS ALSO FORCED TO RETIRE.

    ALTHOUGH HILL FOUGHT TO CATCH THE FLYING STEWART ON THE WET CIRCUIT IN THIS THE FIRST EVENT OF THE 1969 FORMULA ONE SERIES, THE YOUNG SCOTSMAN HELD ON TO FLASH PAST THE CHEQUERED FLAG THE WINNER. HILL WAS SECOND WITH DENNY HULME THIRD.
