  • Description

In Greece, the classic historical run from Marathon to Athens has been re-enacted.

SYNOPSIS: About 12 hundred runners from many parts of the world gathered at the Greek village of Marathon for the run. Girls from the village in traditional costume danced in honour of the runners who commemorate the original hero who ran the distance.

Away they go to run the standard Olympic Marathon distance of 26 miles and 385 yards (42 Kms 195 metres).

The original distance was almost 23 miles, (nearly 37 Kms) and it was run in 490 B.C. by the young Athenian warrior, Phidippides, who took the message from Marathon to Athens that the Persian invaders had been beaten by the Greeks. After giving his message he dropped dead. It's a prestige event as well as a sporting contest and even girls entered in the race.

The winner of the race was Edgar Friedli of Switzerland, who took two hours, 38 minutes and 54 seconds. The stadium where the runners finished was built for the first restaging in 1896 of the Olympic Games since ancient times. Second was Klaus Orthen, of West Germany. It was at this stadium that the Marathon event was first run in the Olympics. Third was Gerbert Regussen of Denmark, much fitter than the Greek who first ran the distance.
