  • Description

The 137th anniversary of Greek Independence was celebrated throughout the country today and provided, once again, an opportunity for the populace at large to harangue and demonstrate against the Turks, the British and to sharpen their tongues on the subject of Cyprus. At a higher level, however, the day was marked with more formal functions. The Greek Royal family attended the official Doxology service at Athens Cathedral - sung in memory of the 1821 patriots - which was conducted by Archbishop Theoklitos. Later, King Paul took the salute at a big parade of Greek armed forces. Another kind of parade found Greek students and fourth Organisations with their flags and banners passing before the Education Minister.
