  • Description

BRITISH PARATROOPERS TODAY (MONDAY) KEPT A TIGHT GRIP ON THE BATTLE-SCARRED SHANKILL ROAD AREA OF BELFAST, AS AN UNEASY CALM REIGNED OVER THE PROTESTANT DISTRICT FOLLOWING TWO NIGHTS OF BLOODY RIOTING.

ALL VEHICLES - IN OR OUT OF THE DISTRICT - WERE BEING STOPPED AT ROADBLOCKS AND THOROUGHLY CHECKED FOR ARMS, AFTER AN EARLY-MORNING SEARCH PARTY HAD UNCOVERED A CACHE OF PETROL BOMBS, RIFLES AND AMMUNITION. OTHER SEARCHES TURNED UP CLUBS AND VARIOUS OTHER WEAPONS.

AS ARMY MARKSMEN WERE POSTED ON ROOFTOPS AND STREET CORNERS TO WATCH OUT FOR SNIPERS, THE LOCAL PEOPLE WENT ABOUT THEIR EVERYDAY SHOPPING AND ERRANDS.

THE ARMY ARE NOT TAKING ANY CHANGES - AS FEAR CONTINUES FOR A REOUTBURST OF THE VENGEFUL PROTESTANT VIOLENCE WHICH EXPLODED ON SATURDAY NIGHT AND CONTINUED THROUGH SUNDAY, KILLING THREE AND INJURING MANY OTHERS. AND THE TROOPS HAVE STOPPED BEHAVING - AS ONE YOUNG OFFICER PUT IT - LIKE "CEREMONIAL GUARDS AT THE PALACE." STONED, SHOT AT AND PELTED WITH PETROL BOMBS BY FANATICS, THEY ARE NOW UNDER ORDERS TO SHOOT BACK, TO KILL IF NECESSARY, WHEN UNDER DIRECT ATTACK.
