    Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, President of the libyan Arab Republic, has made a strong attack on the presence of British military bases in Malta.

    the attack came during a 50-minute address made by the Colonel to thousands of maltese gathered in the little town of Cospicua on the second day of his official visit to the Mediterranean island.

    President Gaddafi said that when Malta got rid of British bases on its soil, Libya and Malta could made a big contribution towards peace in the Mediterranean.

    He told the crowd Libya would be the first country to support Malta in getting rid of the bases.

    Colonel Gaddafi, who was once reported to have offered Malta a merger between the two nations, said: "While Libya is rich in resources, Malta is rich in its technological expertise. If we put together the technology of Malta and the resources of Libya, we can do great work".
