  • Description

Some two thousand Government labour supporters thronged the streets of Valletta in Malta on Monday (January 31) as Prime Minister Mr. Mintoff arrived at Parliament to refuse opposition demands for details on Anglo-Maltese talks. It was the first Parliamentary session for two weeks, and in the meantime Mr. Mintoff had had several meetings with British Defence Secretary Lord Carrington in Rome--where the two men discussed the rent for British use of Maltese military bases. The talks were continuing.

The demonstration outside Parliament was noisy but peaceful. But a splinter group which broke away to attack the offices of an anti-Government newspaper nearby clashed with police. No arrests were made.
