Background: Brian Gottfried of the United States beat fellow countryman Harold Solomon 6-2, 7-6, 6-1 to take the South Pacific Tennis Championships in Melbourne, Australia on Sunday (12 October) and the 8,000 Australian dollar (GBP5,000 sterling) first prize.

Gottfried had only one anxious time on the way to his straight sets win over the small Texan - that was when Solomon refused to go down in the second set and took his opponent to a tie breaker. Gottfried won the tie breaker 7-2 and the final set with ease 6-1.

Solomon generally gave his stronger opponent too much room to paly his most powerful shots, but his own two-handed shots had defeated Australian Phil Dent in the semi-final to ensure the all American battle for the title.

Gottfried won the point and needed only one more to take the second set which they had fought through to a six-six draw before the tie breaker became necessary. The speed of the small Texan's returns gave the powerful Gottfried too much time.

Gottfried had had to struggle to take the second set after winning the first comfortably six-two. Rain had caused a delay of more than fifty minutes and Gottfried was determined to press for a straight set win. He soon had Solomon -- serving from the far end -- in big trouble. The Texan and not taken long to fall five games to love down and he desperately needed to hold his service in this game to avoid a resounding defeat.

Solomon was trying to keep his stronger opponent on the baseline but his shot to the back of the court was a little too long.

That left Solomon serving to save match point and a straight sets defeat.

Once more it was a misjudged shot to the back of the court that proved Solomon's undoing....Gottfried won six-two, seven-six, six-one.

With the rain delay it had taken Gottfried more than three hours but he had won in convincing style and earned himself the eight thousand dollar first prize.

Solomon was well beaten but he had had his moment in the semi-finals when he defeated top Australian Phil Dent to pave the way for the all American final.
