  • Description

CLASHES ARE CONTINUING BETWEEN DUTCH POLICE AND MEMBERS OF THE "FREE FARMERS" GROUP WHO REFUSES TO PAY A COMPULSORY LEVY IMPOSED ON THE COUNTRY'S FARMERS BY THE NETHERLANDS AGRICULTURAL BOARD. ON OCTOBER 12 THE "FREE FARMERS" DEMONSTRATED IN THE COURTHOUSE AT ASSEN, NORTH EAST HOLLAND, AGAINST THE COMPULSORY SALE OF SEVEN FARMS.

THE SALE WAS ORDERED SO THAT THE BOARD COULD CLAIM THE MONEY OWING TO THEM FROM THE PROCEEDS. BUT WHEN BIDDING BEGAN THERE WERE OFFERS FOR ONLY THREE, AND THESE WERE MADE BY THE BOARD.

MEANWHILE, ABOUT A HUNDRED FARMERS GATHERED OUTSIDE THE COURTHOUSE TO PROTEST AT THE SALE. OTHER "FREE FARMERS" WHO WANTED TO JOIN IN THE PROTEST WERE TURNED BACK BY POLICE PATROLS ON ROADS LEADING INTO TOWN.

AFTER LEAVING THE COURTHOUSE, THE FARMERS WENT TO THE SMALL TOWN OF HOOGEVEEN, SOME TWENTY MILES AWAY, TO HOLD A FURTHER PROTEST MEETING IN A HOTEL. THERE WERE A NUMBER OF SCUFFLES WITH POLICE AND TWO MEN WERE TAKEN AWAY.

ABOUT 95 PER CENT OF DUTCH FARMERS PAY THE BOARD'S LEVY, AND THE NATIONAL FARMERS' UNIONS DO NOT APPROVE OF THE ACTION OF THE "FREE FARMERS". IN SEPTEMBER, MEMBERS OF THE GROUP WERE IN TROUBLE WITH THE POLICE WHEN THEY BLOCKED ROADS WITH FARM VEHICLES PROTESTING AT THE LEVY.
