BOBBY SUMMERS OF CALIFORNIA ON FRIDAY SET UP A NEW WORLD-RECORD FOR WHEEL-DRIVEN VEHICLES. RACING ACROSS THE BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS IN UTAH HE AVERAGED 409.277 MILES (654.84 KMS) AN HOUR FOR THE MEASURED MILE - EASILY BREAKING THE RECORD HELD BY DONALD CAMPBELL OF BRITAIN.

SUMMERS - WHO IS 28 - DROVE THE CAR TWICE THROUGH THE MEASURED MILE TO BEAT DONALD CAMPBELL'S RECORD OF 403.1 MILES (644.9 KMS) PER HOUR. SUMMERS' NEW RECORD IS NOT THE FASTEST SPEED REACHED ON LAND - BUT IT IS THE FASTEST TO BE REACHED BY A VEHICLE WHOSE WHEELS ARE CONTROLLED IN THE SAME WAY AS CONVENTIONAL SALOON CARS. CARS PROPELLED BY JET ENGINES HAVE REACHED MUCH HIGHER SPEEDS. ON THESE SAME SALT FLATS ONLY A FEW DAYS PREVIOUSLY ART ARFONS REACHED 576 MILES (922 KMS) PER HOUR IN A JET CAR.

SUMMERS MADE HIS RECORD BREAKING RUNS WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE FIRST RUN WAS FASTEST - AND AT THE END OF IT A TEAM-MATE HELD UP A BLACKBOARD READING "410 PLUS" INDICATING THAT SUMMERS HAD REACHED MORE THAN 410 MILES AN HOUR AT ONE POINT.

THE CAR IS POWERED BY FOUR ENGINES CAPABLE OF GENERATING 2400 HORSEPOWER.
