  • Description

About 500 persons browsed through personal possessions of the late Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt and her late husband Thursday night (17 September) at a $10-a-ticket champagne preview of the sale that will last through 3 October.

By evening's end, nearly one-third of the 6,500 articles from Mrs. Roosevelt's New York City apartment and her country home at Hyde Park, New York, north of New York City, had been sold for a total estimated at between $75,000 and $100,000.

Proceeds of the sale at the Hammer Galleries in New York City will go to the Eleanor Roosevelt Memorial Foundation.

Mrs. Elliott Roosevelt, wife of one of the late President's sons, bought several upholstered chairs, monogrammed silver, glassware porcelain, books and other items.

One of the more interesting items went for $75 to a 16-year-old girl who had written in advance for permission to buy it. This was a red bed once used by the late President's dog, Fala.
