    England recovered somewhat on the second day of the third cricket Test being played in Melbourne, Australia. England ended the first day with seven wickets down and only 176 runs on the board. They resumed their innings on Friday (27 December) and were all out for 242, thanks to a solid batting performance by Knott, who scored 52.

    Australian fast bowler Jeff Thomson continued his attack on the England batting line-up, taking two of the three wickets. He finished with four wickets for 72 runs, giving him a tally of 20 wickets in the series so far.

    The other England wicket was captured by Walker, who had Underwood caught by Marsh.

    The Australians began their first innings and at the close of play were no wickets for 63. However, the openers - Redpath and Wally Edwards - lost 2 1/4 hours batting time after bad weather stopped play.
