    AT THE NEW YORK SHIP BUILDING CORPORATION YARDS IN CANDEN, NEW JERSEY (place - source) TODAY THE BIG JOB OF PUTTING THE NUCLEAR REACTOR INTO THE WORLD'S FIRST NUCLEAR POWERED MERCHANT SHIP, "THE SAVANNAH"....... AND FOR THE WORKMEN IT WAS A DAY LONG BATTLE TO GET THE 122-TON REACTOR ABOARD THE HULL OF THE SHIP AND INTO PLACE. NO EASY JOB THE TASK OF GETTING THE CYLINDRICAL REACTOR OFF A SPECIAL RAILROAD FLAT-CAR AND INTO POSITION; BUT AFTER WHIPPING THE PROBLEM OF KEEPING THE REACTOR IN BALANCE, IT WAS SMOOTH GOING AS FAR AS THIS STAGE OF THE GOING WAS CONCERNED.

    A HUGE CRANE SWUNG THE REACTOR OVER THE 'SAVANNAH', WHICH IS NOW SIXTY (60) PERCENT COMPLETED. THE ACTUAL NUCLEAR CORE WON'T BE PUT IN UNTIL THE SHIP IS READY TO PUT TO SEA, BUT NOW THE TICKELISH TASK OF FITTING THE REACTOR, WHICH IS TWELVE (12) FEET IN DIAMETER THROUGH THE FOURTEEN (14) FOOT OPENING IN THE DECK...." LIKE THREADING A NEEDLE", THE WORKMEN SAID.....DOWN INTO A MID-SHIP'S POSITION, WHERE THE REACTOR WILL OPERATE TO RUN THE "SAVANNAH" FOR THREE (3) YEARS WITHOUT RE-FUELING. YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU ARE PLAYING WITH A 10-MILLION DOLLAR PIECE OF EQUIPMENT, BUT THE JOB WENT OFF WITHOUT A HITCH AND COME JULY 21ST, "THE SAVANNAH" WILL BE READY FOR LAUNCHING.....AND....MRS. MAMIE EISENHOWER WILL BE ON HAND IN CAMDEN TO DO THE CHRISTENING HONORS. A BIG STEP FORWARD TODAY FOR THE NUCLEAR SHIP "SAVANNAH."
