Background: A CROWD HAS ASSEMBLED ON THE BANK OF THE BARAWAK RIVER FOR THE ANNUAL REGATTA HELD IN KUCHING, THE CAPITAL OF THE BRITISH COLONY OF SARAWAK IS BORNEO. PEOPLE BAD COME FROM PLACES FAR AWAY IN THEIR SAMPANS (SMALL BOATS) TO WITNESS THIS ANNUAL EVENT.

ONE OF THE INTERESTING ITEM OF THE EVENT WAS THE DRAGON BOAT RACING FOR WHICH THE ROWERS HAD PRACTISED HARD TO KEEP THEM IN TRIM. QUITE NATURALLY, EVERYBODY WANTED TO HAVE A LOCK AT THE RACE - THE MOTHER PRECARIOUSLY BALANCING HER BABY ON THE SMALL BOAT, AND OF COURSE, LADIES WHO ARE MORE COMFORTABLE UNDER THE PROTECTIVE UMBRELLAS.

THIS IS A YEARLY EVENT IN KUCHING AND, APART FROM DRAGON BOAT RACES, THERE ARE RACES OF LONG BOATS TYPICAL OF THIS COUNTRY OF MANY RIVERS IN WHICH THE RIVER AND NOT THE ROADS CONSTITUTE THE MAJOR MEDIUM OF COMMUNICATION.

THE SARAWAK RIVER, SOME 18 MILES FROM THE SEA CAN BE REACHED BY SHIPS OF UP TO 2,500 TONS AND IS TEE MAIN OUTLET FOR SARAWAK'S EXPORT PRODUCTS LIKE TIMBER, RUBBER AND PEPPER.

ALL THE COMMUNITIES TAKE PART IN THIS REGATTA, AND WHILE MALAYS AND DYAKS ARE EXPERTS IN THEIR LONG BOATS, THE CHINESE SPECIALISE IN THE DRAGON BOATS.

THERE ARE PRIZES FOR ALL THE WINNERS INCLUDING A COVETED SHIELD FOR THE BIGGEST ITEM OF THE DAY.
