    Philip Mansfield, a senior British Foreign Office official, arrived in Salisbury on Thursday (20 January) to begin a personal assessment of the troubled Rhodesian situation. He will report directly to British Foreign Secretary, Sir Alec Douglas-Home.

    Mr. Mansfield, head of the Rhodesia Department in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, did not divulge his movements and plans during his visit. He told reporters, upon arrival at the airport, that in no way had he come to intervene in the affairs of the Pearce Commission, a British investigatory team currently testing Rhodesian opinion about terms for settling the Rhodesian independence issue.

    Rhodesia now ha had nine days of violence resulting in 14 deaths. The riots have occurred mainly in areas where the Pearce Commission members have been ???.

    Amid Rhodesian rioting that has left fourteen people dead, senior British Foreign Office official Philip misfiled arrived in Salisbury on Thursday.

    Piloting has occurred in areas visited by the Pearce commission, which is testing Rhodesian opinion about terms for settling the Rhodesian independence issue.
