Background: The French to Somalia, M. Jean Gueury, arrived at his home in Paris on Saturday (29 March) from Djibouti after being freed on Friday by kidnappers who had held him hostage for five days.
M. Gueury, 48, was released in Aden in exchange for two guerrillas freed by France and a ransom of 100,000 dollars (GBP42,000 sterling) in gold.
He was taken captive in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, as he left Mass last Sunday (23 March) byu two gunmen who flew with him to Aden. They and the freed guerrillas belong to a federation group seeking independence for the French territories of the Afars and the Issas.
Before leaving Djibouti, capital of the French territories, M. Gueury tola newsmen that diplomats had now become "front-line combatants."
