    In the Philippines, the Chinese Vice premier Li Hsien-Nien and Foreign Minister Huang Hua were given a massive and noisy welcome on Sunday (March 12) when they arrives at Manila International airport for the start of a four day official visit.

    SYNOPSIS: The huge welcome was headed by President Ferdinand Marcos and his wife Imelda, who seemed determined to match the welcome that greeted them their past visit to China. The airport reverberated to the sound of bamboo instruments and the crash of gongs.

    A colourful display by hundreds of flower waving and clapping schoolchildren greeted the Chinese dignitaries and their wives as they made their way across the tarmac (SEQ 1-2)
    The visit to the Philippines, is the first ever by high ranking Chinese leaders since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1975.

    After the formal honours, the Chines party was introduces to the Philippines cabinet and diplomats from the Chinese embassy.

    Manila newspapers hailed the visit as significant in strengthening relations between the Philippines and China. They boosted China as an example of self reliance for all developing countries.

    Later at the largest state banquet ever given to a foreign dignitary, the Chinese Vice premier offered his country's full backing to the non-Communist Association of South East Asian Nations in its search for regional neutrality and the protection of its natural resources in the face of the super powers.

    On Tuesday (14 March) President marcos and Mr Li ... who ranks fourth in the Chinese Communist Party,, will hold talks on board the Presidential yacht as it cruises Manila Bay. (SEQ 3-9)
