Background: The Syrian Prime Minister, General Abdul Rahman Khliefawi, has been holding talks with government leaders in Rumania.
SYNOPSIS: General Khliefawi headed a delegation to Rumania and spent three days on his official visit there. He met with Rumania's President Ceausescu, and Prime Minister Manescu in Bucharest. Several ministers from Syria are among the delegation.
Officials have said that talks between General Khliefawi, President Causescu, and other leaders are aimed at strengthening co-operation between the two countries int he economic, technical and financial fields.
Syria was one of the countries that broke off diplomatic relations with Rumania in 1970, following the upgrading of Rumanian and Israeli diplomatic missions. Rumania is the only communist country in Europe to have maintained relations with Israel after the June 1967 war in the Middle East. The present delegation to Rumania includes the vice premier of economic affairs, M. Jamil Shai.
