Background: TENSION CONTINUES BETWEEN THE NEGRO AND INDIAN COMMUNITIES IN BRITISH GUIANA. BRITISH TROOPS HAVE BEEN PATROLLING THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN THE NEGRO VILLAGE OF BUXTON AND THE NEIGHBOURING INDIAN COMMUNITY AT ANNANDALE, 12 MILES EAST OF GEORGETOWN.

THE PATROLS WERE MOVED INTO THE AREA AFTER THREE NEGROES WERE SHOT DEAD ON JULY 3. THE NEGROES, WHO INCLUDED A 14 YEAR-OLD BOY, WERE AMBUSHED AFTER LEAVING BUXTON BY CANOE TO GO TO WORK IN THE NEARBY FARMLANDS. TROOPS AND AN ARMY HELICOPTER STARTED A MASSIVE SEARCH FOR THE KILLERS.

ON THURSDAY, THE FUNERAL OF THE AMBUSH VICTIMS WAS HELD. DEMONSTRATIONS AND CLASHES WERE EXPECTED, BUT A STRONG FORCE OF TROOPS WERE STATIONED ALONG THE ROUTE, AND THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS.

BUXTON AND THE AREA SURROUNDING THE VILLAGE HAS BEEN THE SCENE OF SOME OF THE MOST VIOLENT CLASHES DURING THE CRISIS. YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) A DUSK-TO-DAWN CURFEW WAS IMPOSED OVER THE WHOLE AREA "BECAUSE OF CONTINUED ACTS OF ARSON, VIOLENCE, AND OTHER RACIAL INCIDENTS RECURRING IN THIS AREA".

THE DISTRICT IS A "CONTROLLED AREA" AND ALL PEOPLE ENTERING OR PASSING THROUGH THE ZONE, ARE SUBJECT TO MILITARY CONTROL AND POSSIBLE SEARCH BY PATROLLING TROOPS AND POLICE. TODAY (SATURDAY) THE DEATH ROLL FOR BRITISH GUIANA'S FOUR MONTHS OF VIOLENCE WAS PUT AT 108.
