  • Description

A three-day gale along the eastern Australian coast by Tuesday (28 May) had claimed at least seven lives and caused more than 20 million Australian dollars (GBP 12.5 million sterling) damage.

The storm -- the worst in 20 years -- grounded the Norwegian bulk carrier Sygna, off the city of Newcastle, in New South Wales. The crew was plucked off by helicopter before the tanker split in two, spilling thousands of tons of oil on to Newcastle beaches.

In Sydney, the New South Wales capital, coastal suburbs were hit by raging winds and mountainous seas. Many houses had their roofs ripped off and power lines were downed, causing electricity black-outs over wide areas.

Three yachts were reported missing off the coast, and the Royal Australian Navy and Air Force mounted a massive search covering 600 miles (970 kms) from Sydney, north to Brisbane, the Queensland State capital.

The New South Wales Government has asked Prime Minister Gough Whitlam To provide Federal financial assistance for the storm victims.
