  • Description

AN UNUSUAL ARTICLE CAME UNDER THE AUCTIONEER'S HAMMER IN BRUSSELS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY). IT WAS A MUMMY, BELIEVED TO BE THAT OF AN EGYPTIAN PRINCESS WHO DIED ABOUT THE YEAR 2200 B.C.

THE MUMMY WAS SOLD TO MR. GEORGE LANNOY FOR MORE THAN FOUR HUNDRED POUNDS (60,000 BELGIAN FRANCS).

THE AUCTION WAS HELD IN ONE OF BRUSSELS LARGER DEPARTMENT STORES. THE MUMMY WAS VERY WELL PRESERVED -- ESPECIALLY THE BASE OF THE SKULL AND THE CROSSED ARMS. THE LID OF THE COFFIN, SIMILAR TO OTHERS FOUND IN THE LUXOR REGION OF THIS DYNASTY, IS PAINTED AND REPRESENTS THE DEAD PERSON STANDING UP WITH CROSSED ARMS. THE GARMENTS ARE DECORATED WITH A SCARAB ON THE BREAST.
