  • Description

Ethiopia is reported to be pouring military reinforcements into the Eritrean port of Massawa to fight off a siege by secessionist guerrillas, according to diplomats in Addis Ababa. The guerrillas claim that they have managed to cut off the town and have captured sectors of it.

SYNOPSIS: The fighting for Massawa has been fierce.... for the victors it means control of access to the Red Sea port. Eight thousand government troops were guarding the port.... and according to Eritrean People's Liberation Front guerrillas, it took 36 hours for them to be defeated.

Gorilla claims that they have succeeded in capturing sectors of the town of Massawa have not been confirmed....nor have their claims that they have killed 4,000 Ethiopian government troops for the loss of only 1,000 of their own men. But their advance appears to have been steady.

But there's no doubt the death toll has been high. In the wake of the guerrillas' advance...horribly mutilated bodies are strewn around the rough terrain.

Abandende, too, dozens of Ethiopian Army trucks.... and even tanks. And for the guerrillas....fighting a battle which goes back to the end of the Second World War....victory in the key battle of Massawa clearly seems close.
