Background: A bomb wrecked a conference hall in the central Argentine city of Cordoba on Sunday (16 November) but there were no injuries. The hall was to have been used for the first party conference of a left-wing Peronist splinter group called the Authentic Peronist Party.

The Authentic Party was founded in March by dissident parliamentarians and former provincial governors who claim that President Isabel Peron's government has betrayed the Peronist revolution. The Party has repeatedly alleged that Mrs. Peron's government has not followed the true revolutionary policies of her late husband President Juan Peron.

Mrs. Peron is facing possible charges of corruption at the moment and there have been calls from many quarters that she resign in the face of the country's continuing wave of political killings and economic crisis.

Argentine authorities believe the Authentic Party has links with the banned Montoneros guerrillas, chiefly comprised of Peronist Revolutionary Youth. They have also accused Authentic Party official Jaime Dri, a National Congressional Deputy, of organising a massive guerrilla raid on the northern town of Formosa in which more than 50 people died last month.

The bomb did not stop the Authentic Party's first Congress. They met in a makeshift meeting hall elsewhere in the city - and party official Andres Framini started proceedings by telling the delegates from 16 of Argentina's 23 provinces that the entire Peronist government should quit with Senora Peron to pave the way for General Elections.
