Five 122mm. rockets struck the northern city of Danang in South Vietnam on Wednesday night (5 May). One landed in a densely-populated residential area, killing 11 people and wounding 17 others. The dead included a mother and her five children.
The big United States air base at Danang is subjected to regular shelling, but this was the first time for six weeks that the city's civilian population had been attacked.
Military authorities said the attack could have been in retaliation for last weeks' decision to allow U.S. military personnel to visit the city for the first time in two years.
