  • Description

THE NEGOTIATIONS AT PRESENT UNDERWAY IN TOKYO WITH THE IDEA OF NORMALISING DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN KOREA AND JAPAN, HAVE BROUGHT THREE DAYS OF STRONG -- OFTEN VIOLENT -- DEMONSTRATIONS IN SEOUL AND OTHER MAJOR SOUTH KOREAN CITIES.

ON TUESDAY (24TH MARCH), THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS FROM THE THREE UNIVERSITIES IN SEOUL MARCHED ON THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY BUILDING DEMANDING AND END TO THE TALKS. THE CLASHED WITH MORE THAN 100 CLUB-SWINGING POLICEMEN, AND AROUND 40 WERE ARRESTED AND TAKEN AWAY IN POLICE WAGONS.

THAT WAS THE FIRST DEMONSTRATION. IN OTHERS WHICH FOLLOWED IT, SOME STUDENTS CARRIED POSTERS ADVERTISING JAPANESE PRODUCTS TO A POINT IN THE CENTRE OF THE CITY WHERE THEY BURNT THEM. THIS WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THREATS THAT IF JAPANESE BUSINESSMEN DID NOT LEAVE THE COUNTRY WITHIN 24 HOURS, THEIR HOUSES WOULD BE BURNT. SO FAR, HOWEVER, THE THREAT HAS NOT BEEN ACTED UPON.

(IN 1961 STUDENTS IN SEOUL WERE ONE OF THE MAIN FORCES WHICH TOPPLED THE GOVERNMENT OF PRESIDENT SYNGMAN RHEE.)
