Background: THE CONTINENT OF EUROPE TODAY (THURSDAY) PAID TRIBUTE TO THE LATE ROBERT KENNEDY. THE STARS AND STRIPES FLEW AT HALF MAST IN DOZENS OF EUROPEAN CITIES AND NATIONAL LEADERS PAID THEIR RESPECTS TO THE ASSASSINATED AMERICAN SENATOR.

LONDON: SORROWING PEOPLE CROWDED INTO THE U.S. EMBASSY AND SIGNED A BOOK OF CONDOLENCE. SPECIAL MASSES WERE HELD IN THE WESTMINSTER CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL. QUEEN ELIZABETH SENT A MESSAGE OF SYMPATHY TO MRS ETHEL KENNEDY AND PRIME MINISTER HAROLD WILSON, IN A TELEGRAM TO PRESIDENT JOHNSON, DESCRIBED THE ASSASSINATION AS "SENSELESS VIOLENCE."
PARIS: AS IN LONDON AND ALL OTHER EUROPEAN CAPITALS, THE U.S. EMBASSY PUT ON DISPLAY A BOOK OF CONDOLENCE. GENERAL DE GAULLE SENT TELEGRAMS TO PRESIDENT JOHNSON AND MRS KENNEDY. HE SAID THE SHOOTING WHICH "ONCE AGAIN BEREAVED THE KENNEDY FAMILY DEEPLY SADDENS ALL FRENCHMEN."
IT WAS THE SAME IN ROME, BONN, THE HAGUE AND WEST BERLIN. IN THE WEST GERMAN CAPITAL, THE NEW UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR, MR HENRY CABOT LODGE WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO SIGN THE CONDOLENCE BOOK. THE SOVIET FLAG, TOGETHER WITH THOSE FROM THE U.S., BRITAIN AND FRANCE, WAS FLOWN AT HALF MAST AT THE ALLIED CONTROL AUTHORITY BUILDING IN WEST BERLIN. THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE IN THE CITY WHERE THE FOUR NATIONAL FLAGS ARE STILL FLOWN.

SYNOPSIS: IN ROME THE HEADLINES TOLD THE STORY.

PEOPLE FLOCKED TO THE U.S. EMBASSY TO PAY THEIR LAST RESPECTS. POPE PAUL WHO HAD BEEN PRAYING ALL DAY FOR THE RECOVERY OF SENATOR KENNEDY, WENT TO HIS PRIVATE CHAPEL AND CELEBRATED MASS AS SOON AS HE HEARD OF THE DEATH.

THE U.S. EMBASSY IN PARIS AND FLAGS AT HALF MAST NEEDED NO EXPLAINING.

GENERAL DE GAULLE SENT TELEGRAMS TO PRESIDENT JOHNSON AND MRS ETHEL KENNEDY, HE SAID IN HIS MESSAGES OF SYMPATHY THAT THE EVENTS WHICH HAD ONCE AGAIN BEREAVED THE KENNEDY FAMILY DEEPLY SADDENED ALL FRENCHMEN.

SPECIAL EDITIONS WERE BROUGHT OUT IN MANY EUROPEAN CITIES ONCE THE FLASH OF SENATOR KENNEDY'S DEATH WAS RECEIVED. THIS IS THE PRINTING PLANT OF A BIG EVENING NEWSPAPER IN THE HAGUE, HOLLAND. THE U.S. EMBASSY IN THE HAGUE, THE SILENT PEOPLE FILING PAST THE CONDOLENCE BOOK WAS UNBROKEN AS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE PAID THEIR OWN LITTLE TRIBUTE TO SENATOR KENNEDY.......

A NATIONAL NEWSPAPER IN JOHN, WEST GERMANY. PRESIDENT LUEBKE IN A TELEGRAM TO PRESIDENT JOHNSON EXPRESSED HIS SORROW AT THE ASSASSINATION. HE SAID THAT WHAT HE CALLED, "THIS TIME OF TRIAL" WOULD STRENGTHEN THE RESOLVE OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE TO PRESERVE ITS GOOD TRADITIONS. THE FIRST MAN TO SIGN THE CONDOLENCE BOOK AT THE U.S. EMBASSY IN BONN WAS THE NEW AMERICAN AMBASSADOR, MR. HENRY CABOT LODGE.

WEST BERLIN AND THE ALLIED CONTROL AUTHORITY, THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE FOUR RESIDENT POWERS -- BRITAIN, FRANCE, THE UNITED STATES AND THE SOVIET UNION. THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE IN THE DIVIDED CITY WHERE THE FOUR FLAGS FLY SIDE BY SIDE.

A MEMORIAL TO ANOTHER KENNEDY -- THE ASSASSINATED PRESIDENT. FLOWERS FROM A WOMAN WHO HAD PROBABLY NEVER MET HIS YOUNGER BROTHER. TRIBUTES TO SENATOR ROBERT KENNEDY ARE STILL POURING IN FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. NATIONS IN AFRICA, EUROPE, ASIA, AUSTRALIA AND THE AMERICAS HAVE BEEN ALMOST UNANIMOUS IN THEIR SORROW FOR THE SENSELESS KILLING OF THE MAN WHO MAY HAVE BECOME THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.
