  • Description

Bitterness between the Belgian Government and the striking doctors reached a new peak tonight (Monday) as doctors charged the government with "an unspeakable political manoeuvre".

Doctors of the Malines area near Brussels said the government had distorted their goodwill efforts deliberately in order to mislead the public and to give the impression that the 98 per cent solid doctors front was cracking.

Radio stations in Belgium had widely published a report this morning that 92 doctors in the area of Malines had reached a local agreement under which they would return to work.

But leaders of the striking doctors treated reports of the Malines agreement with reserve and sent a special envoy to Malines to report on the situation.

When the envoy returned to Brussels tonight he reported that the doctors, angered by the government handling of the affair, had declared their agreement null and void and resolved to continue the struggle.

Today was the thirteenth day of the strike which began when doctors refused to work to a government health service plan. There are conflicting reports from Belgium today on the exact state of the medical service. A government spokesman described the situation in the hospitals as nearly perfect with almost two thirds of the doctors in the Belgian Armed Forces Reserve reporting for duty. But the doctors themselves claim the call-up of doctors on the reserves has disorganise the emergency medical services.
