In the city of New York, U.S.A., where the crime rate is alarming, attractive women have good reason to be afraid of being attacked - or "hassled" as New Yorkers call it. But one young lady who has no such fear is Fay Schreibman, who is the Women's Professional World Karate Champion.
But the championship did not come easy. For five years she practised at a karate school in Long Island, and spent between three to six nights a week taking hard physical punishment - and giving it - in the traditional oriental style.
With her championship she also won a thousand dollars. She spent the money on studying to pass her Masters degree in communication. The five years of training have left her with callouses on her feet, and a body that is used to suffering from stiff muscles and bruises.
Nevertheless, she thinks it has all been worthwhile. It has given her a self-confidence that enables her not to be frightened if ever anyone threatens her.
