In Newport, Rhode Island, the best of seven series to determine who will carry off the America's Cup, begins on Tuesday (13 September). The Australian challenger, Australia, will do battle with the veteran American defender, Courageous. The few days leading up to the final have been taken up with last minute preparations and practices.
SYNOPSIS: Australia won her right to challenge Courageous after crushing the Swedish hope Sverige last month in the final of the foreign challenge series. The Australia, skippered by Noel Robins, has been specially built for the America's Cup. Its hull is made completely from aluminium. The Australia syndicate is headed by Alan Bond. He remembers Courageous well, for it was his Southern Cross which was defeated by the American yacht in the 1974 competition in four straight races. By virtue of its win in 1974, Courageous will have the natural advantage. The Courageous skipper, Ted Turner, has been keeping himself busy these final few days sizing up the chances of his Australian opponent.
