  • Description

Normally a fast, dry track, Churchill Down racecourse at louisville was thick with mud caused by overnight rain, when the fifteen runners came out for the start of the 87th Kentucky Derby on May 6.

Although casually bred- his mother was bought for GBP100 -"Carry Back" was a heavy favourite with the crowd, a confidence he confirmed by winning from "Crosier" and "Bass Clef". His owner - Mr. Jack Price - was richer after the race by more than GBP40,000.

Allowing the other horses to pace most of the race, "Carry Back" ridden by Johnay Sellers - was kept back in eleventh position when the field passed the stands on the first time around. As they came into the home stretch,"Carry Back" was in sixth position, from which no Kentucky Derby horse has won in 40 years.

At the head of the stretch "Crozier" led by half-a-length from "Four and twenty", who was another length ahead of "Bass Clef".Then "Carry Back" came through the field to fight out the final fifty yards to win by three-quarters of a length.
