SOME SIXTY ATHLETES TOOK PART, REPRESENTING COUNTRIES INCLUDING THE IVORY COAST, LIBERIA, THE UNITED STATES, KENYA, GHANA, FRANCE, AND WEST GERMANY.

    AMONG SATURDAY'S EVENTS, PRECEDED BY A PARADE OF THE TEAMS, WERE THE 110-METRE HURDLES AND THE JAVELIN THROWS.

    ONE OF THE THOSE COMPETING IN THE JAVELIN THROW WAS KINNUNEN OF FINLAND, THE CURRENT WORLD CHAMPION.

    KIPCHOGE KEINO, KENYA'S OLYMPIC 1,500 METRES CHAMPION, CLOCKED 3 MINUTES, 37.5 SECONDS IN THE 1,500-METRE RACE IN ABIDJAN, WINNING FROM HIS COMPATRIOT BEN JIPCHO. THEY WERE FIRST AND SECOND IN THE 5,000 METRES, ALSO RUN ON SATURDAY.
