  • Description

A BALLOON, CARRYING A THREE-TON TELESCOPE AND CAMERAS TO TAKE HIGH-ALTITUDE PICTURES OF MARS, LANDED ON SATURDAY AT PULASKI, TENNESSEE, U.S.

UNITED STATES SCIENTISTS SAY THEY MAY SOON HAVE A PRELIMINARY REPORT ON WHETHER THE MARTIAN ATMOSPHERE CAN SUPPORT LIFE AS MAN KNOWS IT.

THE BALLOON, WITH ITS 63-HUNDRED POUND PAYLOAD, WAS LAUNCHED ON FRIDAY PALESTINE, TEXAS, IN THE SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES.

THE BALLOON'S TELESCOPE WAS DESIGNED TO PICK UP INFRA RED RADIATION, WHICH COULD PROVIDE MORE ACCURATE INFORMATION ON GASES SURROUNDING MARS.THE FINDINGS MAY SHOW WHETHER THE MARTIAN ATMOSPHERE CONTAINS WATER VAPOUR, CARBON DIOXIDE AND OTHER GASES THAT HELP SUPPORT LIFE FORMS.

ALTHOUGH IT WILL BE TWO OR THREE MONTHS BEFORE SCIENTISTS ARE ABLE TO DECIPHER ALL DETAILS OF THE STUDY - RESULTS AREA EXPECTED TO BE AVAILABLE AHEAD OF DATA FROM A SOVIET ROCKET PROBE DUE TO FLY PAST MARS IN JUNE.
