The enthusiastic welcome given to Princess Margaret, on arrival in Lisbon to begin her 6-day semi-official visit to Portugal, was filmed by Visnews June 6. British Ambassador, Sir Charles Stirling, greeted her and Portuguese Foreign Minister, Dr. Marcelo Mathias, welcomed her on behalf of the Portuguese Government.
Thousands of people - including members of the British colony in Lisbon - were at the Airport, and as Princess Margaret left her aircraft - a Heron of the Queen's Flight - part of the crowd broke the police cordon, swarming round and making it difficult for her to reach a car waiting to take her to the British Embassy. As Princess Margaret finally entered the car, Portuguese students gallantly laid their capes at her feet.
The weather was more English than Portuguese - drizzling rain covering the Airport for the Princess' arrival.
Princess Margaret's visit coincides with the British Trade Fair in Lisbon - sponsored by the Federation of British Industries.
A further welcome awaited Princess Margaret along the six-mile route from the Airport to the British Embassy - which, like the airport, was thronged with enthusiastic crowds.
