  • Description

Khmer Government forces opened an offensive against entrenched Communist positions this week at Takmau, about 7 miles (11 kilometres) south-east of Phnom Penh.

Government artillery and rocket unite opened the attack with long barrages. They were backed up by soldiers firing 60 and 81 millimetre mortars.

The Government mortar offensive, from Highway 30 to a Communist-held area on the east bank of the river Bassac, was supported by soldiers battling their way along the east bank itself.

The soldiers kept up a steady pressure with grenades, machine-gun and M-79 fire, but could only make a small advance on the heavily-entrenched Communist forces, who have held their position at Takmau for a month.

Several Government soldiers were wounded in this push, but details of Communist casualties were not known.

The Visnews cameraman filming this action on Wednesday (8 May) was wounded by shrapnel in the shoulder when a grenade exploded nearby.
