  • Description

The volcano in eruption on Manam Island, off the North Coast of New Guinea, turned on its brightest display Mar 20, when the top was surrounded by a brilliant glow.

From the northernmost of the two craters on the island, a huge stream of lava spills down the mountainside, creeping slowly towards the sea, five thousand feet blow the mountain's peak. The flow of lava has threatened two villages on the northern end of the island, and since a light aircraft made this survey, on which these pictures were taken, a lake of molten lava has formed in the main crater. The Australian government volcanologist, Mr. Taylor, reported this lava was producing occasional explosions, that were hurling incandescent boulders down the mountain-side nearby.

Two years ago, a fleet of boats took 4-thousand Manam Islanders to safety on the mainland, when the volcano erupted violently. However, today, the flow of lava ceased, and the villagers were making no plans to leave their homes.
