  • Description

Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko, who ended two days of talks with British Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas-Home and Prime Minister Edward Heath in London on Wednesday (October 28), extended an invitation for the Foreign Secretary to visit Moscow for talks with Soviet leaders.

Sir Alec is expected to visit Moscow next year. The dates will be fixed through Diplomatic Channels.

Mr.Gromyko's talks in London were centred mainly on East-West relations, the Middle East and other world problems.

One topic of particular importance on the agenda between Mr. Gromyko-who was on his first official visit to Britain for five years-and Sir Alec, was the Berlin problem.

The Russian Foreign Minister emphasised to Sir Alec that the Soviet Union had no intention of undermining existing Allied agreements which determined the status of Berlin.

During the many hours of talks between Mr. Gromyko and Sir Alec, the question of increased trade between Britain and the Soviet Union was explored.

Mr. Gromyko, who arrived in London on Monday (October 26) from New York, paid his first call on Prime Minister Edward Heath on Wednesday (October 28). It was his first meeting with Mr. Heath since he became Conservative Prime Minister last June.

The Soviet Foreign Minister called at number 10 Downing Street, the prim Minister's official residence, to continue discussing the topics which had been the basis of talks between himself and the British Foreign Secretary. Sir Alec douglas-Home was also present at the meeting.

The meeting between Mr. Gromyko and Mr. Heath lasted just under one hour. Later they met again at a working lunch held at the Prime Minister's residence.
