Background: The Finnish Ambassador to Sweden, Mr. Sakari S. Tuomioja, left Stockholm today for New York. There he'll discuss his new post a U.N. mediator in Cyprus with U Thant. He is expected to arrive in Cyprus on Tuesday.
Mr. Tuomioja, a tall, blond Finn of 52, has described his assignment as "difficult but exciting." He has been granted six months leave of absence by his Government. His Cyprus duties are described as "using his best endeavours with the representatives of the communities and the four governments (Britain, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus) for the purpose of promoting a peaceful solution and an agreed settlement in accordance with the United Nations Charter."
Mr. Tuomioja expects to serve in Cyprus from between four to six months.
