    The first Ambassador of The People's Republic of China to Togo, Mr. Wei Pao Shan, has presented his credentials (12 April) to the President of Togo, General Etienne Eyadema. At the ceremony in the Presidential Palace in Lome the new Ambassador spoke of consolidating and developing friendly co-operation between the two countries to the benefit of both. He praised the Togolese people for their fight to win independence and then to preserve it. He also praised them for their support for African nationalist movements and opposition to racial discrimination, apartheid, colonialism and imperialism.

    Responding, the President said his whole people rejoiced with him in receiving the Ambassador as the sole representative of the Chinese people. He also thanked the Ambassador for the reception given to a Togolese delegation which visited China last September, and asked him to pass to Chairman Mao Tse Tung the Togolese people's wishes for the health and future prosperity of the Chinese people.

    The ambassadorial appointment is one of a number The People's Republic of China has made in a diplomatic offensive in Africa.

    SYNOPSIS: The first Ambassador to Togo from The People's Republic of China is greeted by the country's President, General Etienne Eyadema.

    Watched by Chinese officials, Ambassador Mr. Wei Pao Shan spoke of friendly co-operation between the countries.

    In response, President Eyadema said his whole people rejoiced at the establishment of diplomatic relations. His country's assembly had voted unanimously to approve it. He also wished prosperity and health to the Chinese people.

    As his credentials were handed over by the Ambassador, Togolese officials watched.

    Then it was time to toast future relations between the countries.
