  • Description

MORE THAN 6 THOUSAND PUERTO RICANS PARADED AROUND CITY HALL IN NEW YORK YESTERDAY, (SUNDAY), IN A SILENT MARCH TO PRESS THEIR DEMANDS FOR BETTER EDUCATION FACILITIES FOR PUERTO RICANS IN THE CITY.

THE MARCHERS DEMANDED FULL INTEGRATION IN NEW YORK'S SCHOOLS FOR THEIR CHILDREN AND REPRESENTATION FOR THE PUERTO RICAN COMMUNITY ON VARIOUS SCHOOL AND EDUCATIONAL BOARDS.

SOME 250 UNIFORMED AND PLAINCLOTHES POLICE WERE CALLED OUT TO CONTROL THE DEMONSTRATION, BUT THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS. REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CHURCHES AND THE JEWISH FAITH JOINED WITH LOCAL POLITICAL, UNION AND PUERTO RICAN LEADERS IN THE VAN OF THE MUTE PROTEST.

THE MAIN DEMANDS ARE FULL INTEGRATION, REPRESENTATION ON SCHOOL BOARDS, A REQUIREMENT THAT EVERY NEW YORK CITY TEACHER HAVE A WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH, ELIMINATION OF THE I.Q. TEST, AND THAT PUERTO RICAN HISTORY BE INCLUDED IN THE SCHOOL SYLLABUS.

THE PUERTO RICAN LEADERS ARE WORRIED BECAUSE THE LANGUAGE BARRIER IS HAMPERING MANY CHILDREN ADJUST TO SCHOOLING IN THE UNITED STATES AND IS SLOWING THE DEVELOPMENT OF VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS AND ADVANCED STUDY COURSES FOR THE COMMUNITY.

IN RECENT YEARS, THE FLOOD OF PUERTO RICANS, WHO ARE AMERICAN CITIZENS, INTO NEW YORK HAS MADE THEM THE LARGEST SINGLE ETHNIC GROUP IN THE CITY.
