  • Description

Bombs shattered a key police station and petrol pumps at a filling station in the Cyprus capital Nicosia on Sunday (29 July) as the search continued for the kidnapped justice Minister Christos Vakis.

Mr. Vakis was seized by masked gunmen at his home on Friday night (27 July). His disappearance has been blamed by the government of President Makarios on the former EOKA guerrilla leader General George Grivas.

The kidnapping of the Justice Minister has escalated the conflict between General Grivas and President Makarios over the future of Cyprus. President Makarios on Saturday night appealed to his one-time ally to free Mr. Vakis and warned that the people would never submit to what he called, "These terrorist tactics....."
Observers in Nicosia said the Grivas groups -- campaigning for a union of Cyprus with Greece -- might attempt to offer the Jatice Minister's freedom for the release of several dozen political prisoners being held on charges of conspiracy to overthrow the Makarios government.

SYNOPSIS: The kidnapping of the justice Minister coincided with at least thirty bomb explosions around Cyprus -- two of the blasts damaged the home of the Commerce and Industry Minister Mr. Michael kolcassides.

The kyrenia Mountains behind Nicosia are considered a likely place to hide the kidnapped Minister -- observers say he may be exchanged for political prisoners.
