R.A.F. Cadet Under-Officer John Volkers broke all previous records in the Bleriot Anniversary Air Race?

  • Description

R.A.F. Cadet Under-Officer John Volkers broke all previous records in the Bleriot Anniversary Air Race when he completed the outward journey to Paris in 44 mins. 1 sec. and returned to London in 42 mins. 34 secs. - the fastest time yet in the five-day-old Race.

Travelling by motorcycle, helicopter and twin-seat Hunter jet, the 20-year-old cadet from Cranwell R.A.F. College and 'baby' of the R.A.F. team - beat Squadron Leader C. Maughan's best time sin both directions: London-Paris by 34 secs., Paris-London by an amazing 1 min. 2 secs.

Under-office Volkers was near collapse as he arrived at Marble Arch having torn his hand on a winch while being hauled up the embankment at Chelsea. He was taken to hospital where his wounds were stitched.

Under-Officer Volkers had fallen from the back of a motorcycle as he arrived at the Arc de Triomphe, yet at Biggin Hill on the return journey he took only 6 1/2 secs. to switch from his Hunter jet to the waiting helicopter.

He is the son of Brigadier R.J. Volkers C.B.E. of the Royal Army Ordinance Corps, Bicester, and is to get his R.A.F. Pilot's wings at Cranwell, Lincolnshire next Wednesday, 22nd. He will be posted to an operational Hunter squadron.
