SYNOPSIS: Six hundred Ghanaian paratroops have been showing their paces in the English countryside. They are guests of the British Army in a six-week exchange exercise which began last month. On Thursday the soldiers - of the 2nd Batallion and Airborne Company of the Ghana army - were learning all there is to know about mortars.

In Ghana the regular army and auxiliary forces amount to about 8,000 men - and the airforce is small. But these paratroops are able to learn from a team of experts at the British Army base at nearby Aldershot - the home of several large military headquarters.

The Ghanaians are under the guidance of the 3rd Batallion British Parachute Regiment. While they work out on the flat expanse of Salisbury Plain, British troops are undergoing jungle training in Ghana. The exchange - aimed at giving both armies experience of varied climates and terrain - ends on August 25.
