Background: French over 95 kilos Olympic champion Angelo Parisi won a gold medal in the open finals in the European Judo championships in Paris, on May 15. He defeated another champion the Belgian under 95 kilos Olympian Robert van de Walle. The 30-year-old Parisi threw Van de Walle to the floor twice, both times just outside the mat. A referee declared Parisi as winner to a jubilant French crowd. Parisi took the European light-heavyweight title for Britain in 1972. He later became a French citizen, after marrying a French woman.
