Background: Dr.Martin Luther King Jr., the Negro civil rights leader and hundreds of other Negroes were arrested in Selma, Alabama (southern U.S.) Monday during a demonstration against hindrances to Negro voting registration.

Dr.King and almost 300 adults started at a Methodist church and began a march to the county courthouse, where voting registration was under way, to protest difficult literacy tests and slow procedures.After three blocks, the marchers were halted by the city's director of public safety, Wilson Baker, who told them they were violating a city ordinance that requires a permit for parading.King replied that the demonstrators did not feel they were violating any law.Baker permitted the group to walk two more blocks, then told the marchers they were all under arrest for parading without a permit.The Negroes knelt and prayed, then followed King to City Hall, where they were charged.After six hours in jail, most of them were released without bail pending arraignment later this month.Dr.King refused to post the $200 bond required of non-resident defendants and was held in jail.

Later in the day, about 500 Negro students were taken into custody when they stayed out of school to picket the courthouse.Most of them were hauled away in school busses to be turned over to juvenile authorities for truancy proceedings.

Monday's were the first mass arrests in Selma since King opened a campaign four weeks ago to speed Negro voter registration in Alabama.Selma, a city of 28,000, was chosen as a focal point of the drive.
