  • Description

MORE THAN 3,000 SCHOOL CHILDREN PARADED THROUGH THE STREETS OF LEOPOLDVILLE ON FRIDAY IN A DEMONSTRATION ATTACKING THE CONGO PEACE PLAN PROPOSED LAST WEEK BY THE FORMER PRIME MINISTER CYRILLE ADOULA.

    M. ADOULA HAD PROPOSED THAT THE CONGO REBELLION COULD BE ENDED IF M. TSHOMBE WERE DROPPED AS PRIME MINISTER AND A NEW TRANSITIONAL GOVERNMENT, WHICH MIGHT INCLUDE REBEL LEADERS, FORMED. M. TSHOMBE, WHO WAS TO TRAVEL TO BRUSSELS FOR TALKS WITH THE BELGIAN GOVERNMENT, CANCELLED HIS TRIP LAST WEDNESDAY BECAUSE M. ADOULA WAS ALSO VISITING THE BELGIAN CAPITAL.

THE DEMONSTRATION BY THE SCHOOLCHILDREN WAS LED BY ORGANISERS FROM THE GOVERNMENT-SPONSORED "RASSEMBLEMENT NATIONALE DE LA JEUNESSE CONGOLAISE". (NATIONAL UNION OF CONGOLESE YOUTH). THEY MARCHED ABOUT 15 KILOMETRES (9 1/2 MILES) DOWN THE CITY'S MAIN BOULEVARD AND PAST THE PARLIAMENT BUILDING AND M. TSHOMBE'S OFFICIAL RESIDENCE.

THEY CARRIED SLOGANS DENOUNCING THE ADOULA PEACE PLAN, SUPPORTING M. TSHOMBE AND PRESIDENT KASAVUBU, AND ATTACKING AFRICAN LEADERS SUPPORTING THE REBEL MOVEMENT.
