  • Description

Snooker..and this year's United Kingdom Under Twenty-One Championship has been won by 'wonder boy' Mike Hallett. In Monday's (11 December) final at Wembley he crushed the favourite, Tony Meo, four frames to nil.

SYNOPSIS: The fair-haired Hallett had already Meo in the earlier rounds, and was well beaten four frames to one. Seeking revenge in the final, he took the first two frames, 106-34 and 71-46. In the third frame, with only the colours left, he was trailing Meo, and the frame looked lost when he missed the brown.

But twelve points up, and with the frame at his mercy, Meo also failed to pot the brown, and gave Hallett the change he had been waiting for. The thirteen year-old England International and former British Boys Champion took his opportunity and went on to clear the table.

Hallett, from Grimsby in north-east England, began the eight-man tournament as the third seed. The championship was organised by Mike Barrett, better known for his boxing promotions and included youngstars from throughout the United Kingdom. Mike Hallett showed his ability with a break of twenty-two to take the third frame by 55 points to 42, and with a three-love lead.

Meo, an eighteen year-old from London, is tipped as a future World Professional Champion, but he could not equal his opponent's breaks.

Hallett won the fourth frame 74-42 and sprang the biggest surprise the tournament with his four-love whitewash of first seed Meo. It was sweet revenge for the youngster whose impeccable style and flawless technique could take him to the top of world snooker.
