    THE UGANDA GOVERNMENT YESTERDAY AUCTIONED 26 TONS OF ELEPHANT TUSKS, SIX TONS OF HIPPOPOTAMUS TEETH AND 163 LBS. (74 KILOS) OF RHINOCEROS HORNS IN THE BIGGEST SALE OF GAME TROPHIES EVER HELD IN KAMPALA. THE RELICS HAD BEEN SURRENDERED UNDER A TWO-MOTH AMNESTY ON THE POSSESSION OF ILLEGAL GAME TROPHIES.

    THE GOVERNMENT HAD PAID SEVEN SHILLINGS STERLING PER ONE POUND WEIGHT OF IVORY, AND SOLD IT FOR UP TO 22 SHILLINGS PER POUND WEIGHT. HIPPOPOTAMUS TEETH WENT AT UP TO 12s 6D PER POUND WEIGHT, AND RHINOCEROS HORN IT UP TO 85s PER PIECE.

    OFFICIALS SAID THAT ALMOST ALL OF THE TROPHIES WERE SOLD TO CUSTOMERS FROM THE FAR EAST.
