    NEW ZEALANDER CHRIS AMON DRIVING A WORKS "MARCH" HEADED OFF A TOP FIELD OF DRIVERS TO WIN HIS FIRST FORMULA-ONE RACE IN SEVEN YEARS AT SILVERSTONE ON SUNDAY (26TH).

    DRIVING IN DISTINGUISHED COMPANY WHICH INCLUDED FELLOW NEW ZEALANDER DENNIS HULME AND BRUCE MCLAREN, AS WELL AS GRAHAM HILL, JOCHEN RINDT, AND JACK BRABHAM.... CHRIS AMON WAS ALWAYS A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH ON THE SILVERSTONE CIRCUIT WHEN THE 22ND INTERNATIONAL TROPHY RACE GOT UNDER WAY TODAY (SUNDAY 26TH).

    THE RACE WAS HELD IN TWO SECTIONS ON A DAMP TRACK AND IN INTER-MITTENT DRIZZLE. BOTH FACTORS SLOWED DOWN THE AVERAGE SPEEDS, PARTICULARLY IN THE SECOND SECTION.

    THE FIRST SECTION PROVED EASY FOR AMON ONCE AUSTRALIAN JACK BRABHAM WAS FORCE TO RETIRE WITH ENGINE TROUBLE, BUT EVEN THEN..AMON HAD A SIX-SECOND ADVANTAGE AND LED THROUGHOUT TO WIN AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 126.39 MILES AN HOUR (203.39 KPH). BRITAIN JACKIE STEWART... LIKE AMON...WAS DRIVING A "MARCH" AND CAME HOME IN SECOND PLACE 12 SECONDS BEHIND.

    IN THE SECOND LEG, HOWEVER, STEWART TURNED THE TABLES ON AMON... WINNING BY ONLY A HUNDRED YARDS, AFTER A CLOSELY-FOUGHT DUEL.

    CHRIS AMON EMERGED OVERALL WINNER OF THE MEETING WHICH SPELT OUT FURTHER SUCCESS FOR THE NEW "MARCH" CARS. THE EVENT DID NOT COUNT TOWARDS THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.
