  • Description

Britain's ministerial envoy Geoffrey Rippon flew to Nairobi, Kenya Sunday (13 August) after failing to see Ugandan President Idi Amin to discuss to decision to expel thousands of Asians from Uganda.

President Amin had said he could not spare the time to see Mr. Rippon until Tuesday.

But, Mr. Rippon said on his arrival in Nairobi that he nevertheless now has a much clearer idea of the problems facing the estimated sixty-thousand Asians involved.

Mr. Rippon said that the main purpose of his visit to Kenya was to have discussions with British officials -- not to ask President Kenyatta to intercede with Uganda President Amin over the expulsions.

Kenya has already said that it will not allow any of the Asians affected by President Amin's order into the country.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Rippon was greeted by the British High Commissioner Mr. Duff and his staff at Nairobi Airport. Nr. Rippon said upon his arrival that even though President Amin had refused to see him, he now had a mich clearer idea of the problem facing the estimated sixty-thousand Asians involved.
